Course Description
Engaging in cultural awareness training enables individuals to value the wealth of diversity and cultivate meaningful connections across various cultures.
This in-depth 4-hour workshop explains the impact discrimination, racism and lack of cultural understanding has had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This training looks at people’s cultural beliefs, values and how world-views influence thinking, behaviours and interactions with others. It highlights the continuation of inequality and social injustice.
This cultural awareness training encourages learners to value diversity by understanding, accepting and respecting difference. It explores the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history and provides learners with an opportunity for reflecting on their own individual culture.
MCA’s Cultural Awareness Training is delivered by local elder, Garry Kafoa.
- Have further knowledge of and apply culturally safe ways of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- Recognise a Welcome to Country
- Recognise and articulate an acknowledgement of country
- Understand the difference between a Welcome and Acknowledgement
- Understand the importance of each and Lores and Protocols
- Understand what is meant by Connection to Country
- Have gained further knowledge and understanding of the land around us, including cultural sites
- Have gained further knowledge and understanding of the tribal group
- Have gained further understanding and be able to describe the differences between the terms ‘Cultural Awareness’, ‘Cultural Safety‘, ‘Cultural Respect’ and ‘Cultural competence’
- Understand and articulate the historical overview and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture
- Have gained further awareness of the issues /barriers that Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait People face
